Only the lashes make the eye truly expressive. That’s why it’s so important to master this noticeable detail if you want to draw realistic eyes or even an entire portrait. In this tutorial, you will learn how to draw eyelashes that will make your motif’s eye glow. We’ll start by looking at how precisely you should vary the stroke width, before applying this knowledge step-by-step to an entire set of lashes.
The right lines to draw eyelashes
We should first concentrate on the thickness of the pencil strokes. The quality of the lines is crucial if we want to draw beautiful realistic eyelashes.
Use a sharp pencil or a mechanical pencil with a hardness of HB or 2B to create thin and fine lines. Apply pressure on the pencil at the beginning and let it gradually fade out towards the end. This creates thicker roots and thinner tips.

Please also try to draw slightly curved lines, as the lashes never run completely straight. Familiarize yourself with this exercise to gain more self-confidence and to master the varying line thickness of the lashes.
Let us now apply the same principles to some eyelashes on the eye.
Step 1: Sketch the eye shape
In this tutorial, we draw several eyelashes at once to illustrate the changes caused by perspective.
- The top line will be a frontal depicted eyelid.
- The middle sketch shows an open eye from the side.
- The lower drawing illustrates the shape of the lashes when the eye is closed.
Step 2: Consider the shape of the lashes
You can see the curved lines, which are thinner towards the end and thicker in the root area. They grow from the eyelids into different directions and angles.
They vary in length depending on where they are at the base of the eyelashes and usually become shorter towards the corners of the eyes. The longest hairs are in the middle of the eyelashes.
Remember also that eyelashes are irregularly grouped and overlap. Add some irregularity to your sketch to make the lashes look natural.
Step 3: Fill in the eyelashes and increase contrast
As soon as the basic shape of the eye including eyelashes is in place, all you need to do is follow the previously discussed pencil stroke. With the 2B pencil, you can increase the contrast of the drawing and improve the flow of the lashes from the base to the tip.
