Tutorial on how to draw a face from the side
Start with a bit of an elongated circle to represent the skull.
From the circle, plot the guidelines, and first divide it by thirds.
Once you have the thirds measurement, get the middle of each line. This will also reveal the vertical centerline of the circle.
Draw the basic shape of the jaw. The hinge of the jaw lies on or near the vertical centerline. On the side is a reference of the human skull as a guide to the general shape of the jaw.
After, you will have a simplified silhouette of the human head.
The front neck will start near or on 1/3 from the front edge of the face.
Now plot the guidelines from top of the head to the chin. The highlighted part is the area where all the facial features will be.
Halfway from the top of the head to chin, draw the basic shape of the eye socket. The start and end of the facial feature is highlighted in Step 6.
The ears usually start where the hinge of the jaw is so it can be in the vertical centerline or near it. The top of the ears starts on the browline or below it where the nose bridge starts. Halfway from the eyes to the chin is where the bottom of the nose and the earlobes usually align.
Plot another thirds guidelines from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin. The first 1/3 line is where the middle line of the lips is located, and the next 1/3 is where the indentation between the bottom lip and the chin is. A curved line to represent the denture area.
Erase the guidelines and draw in the hairline. Now you have a clean drawing with each facial feature put in the right places. Now it will be easier to refine and set in the details. The red line is just a guide for the basic contour of the face if you are to shade your drawing.
